"To me, doing it as a community project with a number of nonprofits involved, it can only be made stronger," said Larry Cassella, executive director of LARC, which had originally discussed doing a similar public art project of its own.

LARC Executive Director Larry Cassella remembers seeing a walkway that was made out of granite slabs, some of which had writing inscribed. In the basements of two of the three houses on the property, automotive parts, including transmissions and body parts, were found, he said.

"Whoever was there used it for a myriad of things," he said.

He was surprised the earlier cleanup of the site did not unearth the marker."We walked it pretty well, (but) obviously not back there," Cassella said.

The tombstone likely will be removed when contractors begin clearing the property to start construction, he said. He's not sure what the organization will do with it.

LARC Executive Director Larry Cassella said the money will go toward finishing a new facility at 320 Main St. that is currently under construction.

"We are extremely pleased to have the support of the Torrington Area Foundation," Cassella said."Their endorsement of the work that LARC employees do mean a lot."

The facility, which will cost an estimated $1.5 million, will provide day care to patients with complex medical conditions.

"The individuals who will be there will have physical and medical needs as well as being developmentally disabled," Cassella said.

The building should be done by fall, Cassella said, and money received after its completion will go to reimburse LARC for construction costs.
