Brenda Cassella, a medical social worker at Lowell General Hospital, said after so many deaths, a high percentage of the UMass Lowell population will be grieving and everyone grieves differently.
University officials will need to provide ways for students to express their loss through such things as support groups, memorials and tributes, she said.
"Give students a means to unite in their sadness," Cassella said. -

When Brenda Cassella, of Dracut, gave birth to Molly five years ago, her reaction was expected: She grieved. She grieved for the baby she didn't have, the healthy, "normal" baby that Molly would never be. She asked, "Why me?" and "Why her?" When she looked at her daughter, she could think only of what was wrong and different about her.
But after talking to parents of other children with Down syndrome, she was able to adjust her thinking. Instead of focusing on what she didn't have, she looked at Molly and realized the gift that she did have.
"And then," Brenda said with a teary smile, "I fell in love with her."
At that point, Molly was no longer a child with Down syndrome. She was simply Brenda's child, a beautiful baby girl who has brought her and her husband Paul endless joy, along with their three sons, Brent, 12, Cameron, 11, and Kian, 7.
When, a little more than a year later, Linda Couturier gave birth to a baby with Down syndrome, Brenda, a social worker at Lowell General, was immediately there to help, offering words of encouragement and inspiration.

Linda Couturier and Brenda Cassella now offer their experience, counseling and support to all moms who give birth to children with Down syndrome at the hospital.
