Dr. Cassas is a primary care sports medicine physician joining the Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas. His focus will be the non-operative approach to the care of musculoskeletal conditions and sports injuries encountered in either the "weekend warrior" or "elite" athlete.
Earning his medical degree from the University of Nevada in 1997, Dr. Cassas then completed a surgical internship at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas. Following his residency training in family medicine, he completed a Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship at Methodist Hospitals of Dallas in 2002. He is Board Certified in Family Practice with a Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) in Sports Medicine.
Dr. Cassas remained at Methodist Charlton Medical Center after his fellowship and served as associate director of the sports medicine fellowship program, assistant director of the family medicine residency, and assistant professor for The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in the Department of Family Medicine. He was actively involved in the education of medical students, family medicine residents, and sports medicine fellows.
A member of the American College of Sports Medicine, Dr. Cassas has served as a board member for the Texas Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine. He is also a member of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine and the American Academy of Family Physicians. His hobbies include golf, hunting, fishing, and hiking.
His professional interests include sports nutrition and athletic performance, wellness, and injury prevention. While in Texas, Dr. Cassas also founded a concussion awareness program designed to educate athletes and parents about the dangers of concussions and traumatic brain injury. He has served as team physician for local high and colleges in the Dallas/Fort Worth area along with a volunteer physician for the Justin Sportsmedicine Team, providing care to injured rodeo athletes. -
