Mike Cassano was hired as the Golden Panthers' running backs coach and recruiting coordinator on December 26, 2006.Cassano, who has more than 12 years experience coaching running backs and as an offensive assistant, comes to FIU from the University of Miami, where he spent the last three years as a volunteer coach and offensive graduate assistant.
At Miami Cassano played a major role in the Hurricanes' offense and running game all three years and he coached in the 2004 and 2005 Peach Bowls, as well as the 2006 Micron PC Bowl in helping lead the program to a 25-12 record.Cassano worked primarily with the Hurricane running backs in 2006 as a graduate assistant, helping true freshman Javarris James set numerous Miami freshman records with a team-leading 802 yards on 175 carries (4.6 average).With Cassano's assistance in 2005, Miami's backfield scored 19 total touchdowns and averaged 137.6 yards rushing per game, and he worked closely with current San Francisco 49ers running back Frank Gore during the 2004 season.
In 2004, Cassano served as a volunteer assistant and helped guide the Hurricanes to 365.5 yards of offense and 31.7 points per game.The 2004 UM offense produced NFL draftees wide receiver Roscoe Parris (Buffalo Bills, second round), tight end Kevin Everett (Buffalo Bills, third round), running back Frank Gore (San Francisco 49ers, third round) and offensive lineman Chris Myers (Denver Broncos, sixth round).
Prior to his arrival at Miami, Cassano was the running backs coach for one of the most successful programs in Division I-AA, at the University of Massachusetts from 1998 to 2004.

In 1997, Cassano coached the running backs coach at Brown University after stints as a graduate assistant at Lehigh (1994) and Eastern Michigan University (1995 and 1996).
A native of Andover, Mass., Cassano was a two-year letterman at Colgate University and a two-year letterman at the University of New Hampshire.He earned a bachelor's degree in physical education at the University of New Hampshire in 1994 and attended graduate school at Lehigh and Eastern Michigan.He is single.
