In the mid-1980s , when Michelle Cassano joined the Alaska division of the American Diabetes Association , the state program had to fly a handful of youngsters to Seattle for a diabetes camp. Alaska didn't have enough children with the disease to warrant a camp here.
That's no longer the case. Today Alaska can fill its own diabetes camp with 50 children , said Cassano , the association's executive director. Some have Type 2 , which can never be cured. Children can manage it , but they'll be doing so for a lifetime , health officials said.
