M r. Nicholas (Nicky) Cass, Deerpark, Mullinavat, who has died, aged 59 was well known in the Mullinavat and South Kilkenny area. He had up to his passing conducted a Hackney Private Hire Business in Mullinavat and district for the past year or so. Nicky, prior to that had a lot of jobs during his time and worked tirelessly at the old Waterford Iron Foundry Works that was later renamed Waterford Stanley at Bilberry, Waterford between them they were his employer's for nearing 30 years.
Nicholas Cass Taking early retirement less than two years ago, he and his old friend and work colleague Thomas McLaurence, kept the wheels of the industry or as many called it the lifeblood of the industry, the Ironwork furnace's well tuned for the job at hand.
An early riser, Nicky, would be among the first into that Iron works Plant and saw in his time, many come and go. His retirement then was well earned and deserved and he took to the road with in a short time with a Hackney and Private Hire Business that he made his own, very soon afterwards.
The younger generation of revellers tell of his many kind and honorable ways, in his business. Often treating them to a song or two as they journeyed homewards from places in South Kilkenny and Waterford City. One of his favourite song's, `Spancil Hill' that Nicky enjoyed singing was sung as his remains were taken to its lasting place in St. Beacons Cemetery.
Coming from an old Mullinavat/Lukeswell scept, his parents, Paddy Cass and Mai Fitzpatrick were both from the district and they resided in the Ballynooney townland of Mullinavat, Nicky and his sisters were born there and knew all of the districts residents, both young and old.

Nicky was the only son and His sisters are Maisie O Dwyer of Gaulsmills and Eileen Rigby of Tullogher.

His command for history and tracing back was also a trait of the deceased, who was born in the 1944 year. His interest also as a Kilkenny man was the following of hurling of his county and parish and the Sport of Kings, he studied form nearly every day knowing the breeding and blood lines of his choice and took enjoyment from this sport, especially if a winner or two came up on the days racing bets.
