2006 Dr. Carol Cass
Dr. Carol Cass is recognized internationally for her work on understanding an important class of anti-cancer drugs called nucleosides.Dr. Cass has determined that nucleoside-based drugs are able to cross cell membranes by binding to specialized transporter proteins. When this binding occurs, the drugs are able to enter and directly attack cancer cells. Her research is leading to the more effective use of nucleoside drugs and the development of new treatments for patients with acute and chronic leukemias, lymphomas, and cancers of the lung, bladder, breast and pancreas.Dr. Cass has also played an important leadership role in training cancer researchers in translational research.
Dr. Cass has been director of Alberta's Cross Cancer Institute in Alberta since 2003, making her the first basic scientist in Canada to serve as director of a comprehensive cancer centre. She is also chair of oncology and Canada research chair in oncology at the University of Alberta.
