Coincidentally, Dr. Daniel Casriel also chose that day to visit the center.Dr. Casriel was a noted psychiatrist, and at that time a consultant with the Probation Department of the Kings County Supreme Court.Both men were amazed at what they saw that day, and determined to seek further and discover whether this Synanon system could be the answer to addiction.They took their ideas to the National Institute of Mental Health, and were awarded a grant to work with a select group of parolees from the Brooklyn system.On September 1st, 1963, 22 male probationers moved into Butler Manor on Staten Island, and within a year Father O'Brien and Dr. Casriel gethered enough support to found a non-profit corporation to establish a new and larger Daytop.

The need for treatment centers grew, and Father O'Brien and Dr. Casriel turned to Sullivan County in the Catskill Mountains of New York State.
