    Like other professions -- such as medicine, law and journalism -- it's important to encourage a range of people to enter the field, says architect Elizabeth Casqueiro, managing director of alliances for the AIA.

    Bringing in people with different backgrounds helps diversify the approach architects take toward designing structures, she says.

    "Women shop more frequently than men, yet most shopping centers are designed by men," she says.A female architect can point out things in the design stage that a man may not necessarily be aware of, she says.
