The increase is good, according to John Casper, supervisor of secondary education for the Nelson County Schools.

"We're meeting the needs of all the kids here the best we can," he said.

A lot of factors contribute to that success, according to Casper, not limited to career days, vocational programs and counselors working closely with students to find out what they want to do and assisting them with meeting those needs.
    ...
Targeting the individual needs of students, especially on the instructional level, plays a role in making sure students successfully graduate, Casper said.

Key areas like reading and other content are stressed at an early age and then concentrated as students move into middle and high school, he added.

The district also emphasizes the importance of education with students and parents.

"The importance (of education) in the home translates to the importance in school and ultimately (students) do pretty well," Casper said.
    ...
Attendance is an important part of this part of the CATS data, according to Casper.

"If we didn't have a strong attendance rate, all these other areas would drop," he said.

The 95 percent mark is good and it will be difficult for the district to push higher into the 96 percent range."But, we'll focus on that," Casper said.
