Duluth Huskies field manager Jeff Casper has never been to Duluth, but spent two summers in Minnesota as a Northwoods League player, mostly with Brainerd.

Casper, an assistant baseball coach at the University of Arizona, was a four-year letterwinner at the University of Arizona and resides in Tucson, Ariz.

"I have heard Duluth is a college town that is very supportive of its local athletics," Casper said."I am excited to head up near the lake and play in one of the country's most unique ballparks."

The Huskies, one of three expansion clubs in the 10-team Northwoods League, will be a talented, exciting, fundamentally sound team that above all else plays hard, Casper said.

"We have recruited players from all over the Midwest, Southeast, Southwest and West Coast," Casper said."I expect to have a group that will compete for a Northwoods League championship immediately. This is not a two- or three-year plan.I expect the Huskies to be a championship contender immediately."

The Northwoods League, comprised of college players with NCAA eligibility remaining, is a unique brand of baseball, Casper said.

"The players associated with the league are top college players throughout the country," Casper said."It provides the fans a high level of baseball and a chance to see future professional ballplayers before they reach the professional ranks."

The Huskies have 28 players under contract.Players will report around Memorial Day for the season opener June 3 at Wisconsin.

All the players are currently playing with their college teams and, in some cases, some won't join the Huskies until nearly two weeks into the season, as they finish their college seasons.
