   Robert L. Caslen Jr., the commandant of cadets at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, N.Y., has been named as the commanding general of the 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks.

   Caslen was commissioned as an infantry lieutenant at West Point in 1975.
   
   According to his biography, Caslen was a battalion executive officer during Operation Desert Storm in 1991.
   
   He served in several faculty positions at West Point, including football coach. He also previously commanded the 1st Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, a Hawai'i-based unit.
   
   Caslen also served as chief of staff of Coalition Joint Task Force Mountain at Bagram Airbase in Afghanistan.
   
   Before being named as commandant of cadets at West Point, Caslen was deputy director for the war on terrorism within the strategic plans and policy directorate of the Joint Staff.

   The Long War is more than just the battle in Iraq or Afghanistan, and calling the struggle the Long War does not mean that U.S. troops will be in those nations for a long time. Rather, is the term refers to the overall struggle against the ideology of extremism, the general explained.
   
   Defeating an ideology is tough and will require time and resources to win, Caslen said.
