   Dr. Casko presents a systematic approach to diagnosing and treating patients who have large skeletal discrepancies. He emphasizes differentially diagnosing patients with borderline skeletal discrepancies who have malocclusions that might be amenable to orthodontic or combined surgical-orthodontic treatment. He also discusses the importance of the patient's main chief concern in making the differential diagnosis between orthodontic or combined surgical-orthodontic treatment. Dr. Casko uses criteria based on normal, dental and skeletal variation as a basis to determine if it is reasonable to attempt orthodontic correction alone. He presents specific criteria for diagnosing patients with open bites, vertical skeletal excess and vertical skeletal deficiency, and describes the treatment of both Class II and Class III malocclusions.

   Dr. Casko served as professor and head, Department of Orthodontics from 1976 to 2002. In 2000 Dr. Casko was awarded the B.F. and Helen E. Dewel Endowed Chair in Clinical Orthodontics, the first endowed chair in the College of Dentistry. He previously served from 1971-1976 as director of Orthodontic Clinics at the University of North Carolina.
   
   Teaching Responsibilities: Dr. Casko is an experienced clinician and has applied his formal training in higher education to develop and present continuing education courses that are widely recognized for a high degree of clarity, organization, and practical application.
   
   Clinical Activities: Dr. Casko is an active clinician, spending time each week in the private practice of orthodontics as well as instructing the orthodontic residents in the treatment of their clinic patients.
   
   Research Activities: Dr. Casko is involved in the surgical orthodontic treatment of orthodontic patients including research in this field.
