Nori Casimiro, an Iona College graduate student who has a master's degree in creative writing from New York University, has volunteered to teach the program. Casimiro plans to have the children write their memoirs, autobiographies, poems, fiction and nonfiction stories, which could possibly be made into plays. Computers have been donated to the church by the nonprofit PC Users for the young authors to use.

"I'm hoping this will give them a sense of community," Casimiro said. "We can't help them if we don't know them. If they have pain or are troubled at home, it will come out in their writing. It will also strengthen their skills. If we give them something they like to write about, once they go back to school, they'll want to achieve."

Casimiro said she also was happy to be involved with the youth center because of her Latino heritage. She was born in New York; her parents are Puerto Rican and Cuban.

"I'm hoping this thing becomes gigantic," said Casimiro, who is bilingual. "I hope there are so many kids here that this place is exploding with creativity."

Marin, a psychotherapist who is a retired psychology professor from City University of New York, said he planned to invite the community to the program's first play at the end of the summer.
