Then came encouragement, a subtle but powerful form of guidance. Adrianna said her mom seemed glad her daughter opened up about the party. More parties came, and through the years Adrianna talked about them with Maria.

The speech leading up to presenting Adrianna as the Honor Crest winner included this passage: "For those of us who were lucky enough to have been her teachers and those who have known her for her brief stay with us, I want to add this: Although we hold such regard for this radiant, inquisitive, young woman, we can merely imagine the degree of pride her parents and family must have each and every day."

   Adrianna smelled faintly of perfume, she wore a black gown and high heels and a rose corsage on her wrist. She was no longer a child. Her future seemed close at hand. Pretty soon, Adrianna will pack up her filing cabinet and put away her high school soccer jersey and be off to Colorado State University. And some day in the more distant future, Adrianna might become a mother. She wants to be a parent as good as her own. "They've been great," Adrianna said.
