GREENSBORO -- Kay Cashion, a business owner known for her work with charities and the Democratic Party, will replace Jeff Thigpen on the Guilford County Board of Commissioners.

Cashion, 70, owns Cashion's Furniture & Decorating and is recognized by party stalwarts as a good fund-raiser and campaign organizer.She has never held public office before.

She will represent District 6, which covers southwest Greensboro, and will be part of a 7-4 Democratic majority on the board that is sworn in Dec. 6.

"I accept the challenge," Cashion said after Thigpen snapped a county commissioner pin onto her lapel during a Democratic Party meeting Thursday night.

In addition to Cashion, two other candidates were considered: Owen Lewis and J.P. McIntyre, both members of the party's state executive committee.

Cashion said that as commissioner, she would tackle school problems, particularly school violence, and professed a "soft spot" for the county's human service agencies.She pledge to be "a good steward of your investment."

A candidate needed more than half the votes to win the election, and Cashion won on the first ballot.

"I really appreciate all the confidence you have place in me," Cashion told the audience before recognizing supporters individually.

Cashion had run three of Jarrell's state House campaigns.

"Thank goodness there was only a week of it," Cashion said, reporting that she and the other two candidates had been grilled in small meetings with precinct officials.

Cashion was a delegate to the 2004 Democratic National Convention.Her nonpolitical volunteer work has included serving as a board member with Family Service of the Piedmont, chairwoman of the Family & Children's Foundation of Greensboro and in various positions with the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce.

Cashion will be one of five new commissioners seated on Dec. 6.
