Kathryn Cashin has been a devoted member of The Tallahassee Ballet staff since 1985.Besides choreographing and staging a major portion of the Ballet's Nutcracker, including the First Act Party Scene and Kingdom of Snow, she has delighted Tallahassee audiences with favorites such as Romance in F, Notturno, Bolero, Sonata and the ever popular children's ballet, Madeline.She has also choreographed the full-length productions of A Midsummer Night's Dream, Cinderella, Copp,lia and The Sleeping Beauty for the Tallahassee Ballet.Her works have also been performed in Ireland and Pennsylvania.

Ms. Cashin has also restaged several ballets from classical repertoire including Raymonda Variations and Paquita.Ms. Cashin choreographed thirteen of Florida State Opera's works including La Perichole, The Merry Wives of Windsor, Patience, Rigoletto, and Massenet's Cinderella.

As a Principal Dancer in the Ballet, Ms. Cashin originated the roles of the Columbine Doll, Snow Queen, and most notably the Arabian pas de deux in The Tallahassee Ballet's first production of the full-length The Nutcracker.She was featured in Joyce Straub's highly acclaimed Iolite and Richard Sias's Simple Symphony.

Ms. Cashin holds a BA in Russian/Business, MA in Slavic and East European Studies and most recently earned a PhD in humanities.

Ms. Cashin, a former president of Junior League of Tallahassee and graduate of Leadership Tallahassee, serves on the Leadership Council of FSU's College of Arts and Sciences and the Florida Committee for the National Museum for Women in the Arts.

"This year's 'Evening' concert really is a transitional show," Cashin said.

The ballet was created and choreographed by the company's resident choreographer and artistic associate, Kathryn Cashin.

"There's one additional dance since last time that was added for the men in the production," Cashin said before the start of a dress rehearsal on Wednesday night.

Cashin - who graduated last week with a doctorate in humanities from FSU - said she selected "Midsummer Night's Dream" because of its accessibility to a wide audience.

"Our company has a lot of young dancers so we're not ready to add 'Romeo & Juliet' or 'Swan Lake' to our repertoire," Cashin said."The great thing about 'Midsummer Night's Dream' is it appeals to adults and children.There are also a lot of fairy roles for our younger dancers to play."

However, Cashin pointed out, Shakespeare's farcical comedy about magic fairies messing with the love lives of mortals gets deceptively complex when translated to dance.

"This not like 'Romeo and Juliet' where everybody knows the basic story," Cashin said.

No, not the Disney one

Cashin said the feedback for her "Midsummer Night's Dream" has been so positive that - hey, why not - she's adapting and choreographing another original ballet for May 2006.

"OK, first, get Walt Disney out of your head," Cashin said.

"I really feel like we have the most cohesive cast we've ever had for this production," Tallahassee Ballet choreographer Kathryn Cashin said Tuesday night during a rehearsal in Ruby Diamond Auditorium.

Cashin introduced her mini-"Bolero" during an all-French music production of "An Evening of Music and Dance" in 1996.It proved to be a hit with audiences.

"This is a very portable version of 'Bolero,'" Cashin said.
