Jack Cashin grew up on Long Island, and was in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1945.He attended Colgate University, where he earned a B.A. in sociology in three years, and he spent one year as an exchange student in South America. His professional career has included advertising, publishing and operating the restaurant chain Cashin's Place in Atlanta and Augusta, Ga.Currently, he is a farmer and real estate investor: He and his wife, Helen, own and operate Chukkar Farm & Polo Club in Alpharetta, Ga. Married for 58 years, they have six children and 13 grandchildren.
Besides the Libertarian Party, Cashin supports the American Civil Liberties Union, Amnesty International and his college alumni organization.
Cashin supports the Libertarian Party because of its support of freedom from government oppression. As a candidate for commissioner of agriculture, Cashin's platform is intentionally controversial, in order to bring issues to the table that Democrats and Republicans do not address. He feels there are too many government mandates at the federal level, and he also supports rolling property taxes back to the 1970's levels.
Cashin is in favor of an amnesty program for migrant workers who help move our food from the field to the table. His main issue is the re-legalization of industrial hemp as Georgia's new billion dollar crop.
Cashin also supports parimutuel wagering on horse racing, an issue that has been galloping around Georgia for decades. With the passage and acceptance of lottery gambling, horse race wagering is an issue many believe should be considered by the people of Georgia.Profits should be used to enhance school curriculum.Cashin was the Libertarian candidate for Georgia governor in 1998, and he ran for U.S. Senate in 1996.
