    Sister Carmel (Eleanor) Cashin, Sister Carmel (Eleanor) Cashin, OSB, who was born in Proctor and attended elementary school here, died Tues., Apr. 25, 2000 in the St. Scholastica Monastery.She was 86.

    She entered the Duluth Benedictine community in 1931 and professed monastic vows in 1932.Sister Carmel attended elementary school in Proctor and received her secondary education at Villa Scholastica High School in Duluth.She earned her B.S. degree in medical technology from the College of St. Scholastica and her M.S. with specialization in bacteriology from the Institutum Divi Thomae in Cincinnati.

    She was an elementary teacher at St. Thomas School, International Falls and St. Francis School in Brainerd, and served at St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth; St. Joseph's Medical Center, Brainerd; Hibbing General Hospital, Hibbing; and St. Mary's Hospital, Kewaunee, Wis., as a medical technologist.

    In 1973, health problems caused her semi-retirement.In 1976 until her full retirement in 1986, she returned to the monastery as an assistant chemistry laboratory instructor at St. Scholastica.

    Sister Carmel is survived by the sisters of St. Scholastica Monastery, her sister Amy (Wescott) Trainor of Chicago, her brother Gregory Cashin of Australia, and other relatives.

    Burial was in Gethsemane Cemetery.Memorials may be made to St. Scholastica Monastery.Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.
