Town resident Katy Cashen was also concerned with the budgeted figures and their difference from how much was actually spent by the town in the past.

"We have less expenditures than what we actually end up spending," she said.
    ...
Katy Cashen, unsuccessful in her run for a seat on the board, also questioned why some line items were overfunded. She cited the budget for attorney's fees, at $40,000 per year. The actual figures she found in her research, she said, showed only $15,000 spent.

Ms. Cashen asked what would happen if a department head requested "an outrageous sum" for his budget.

CLAVERACK -- Seeking a seat on the Town Board in Claverack is 32-year town resident Katy Cashen, 44, of Roxbury Road, who is running on the Democratic Party line.

Having previously lived in Albany and Washington, D.C., Cashen worked for several years for the New York State Legislature and Governor's Office.

She graduated from Taconic Hills High School in 1979, earned a bachelor's degree in political science from LeMoyne College and a master's degree in public administration from Rockefeller College at SUNY Albany.

Cashen has worked as an advisor/consultant to state government agencies, focusing on workforce issues, for 11 years.

She is a member of the STRIDE organization, is a volunteer Catamount Ski instructor for the disabled, is a member of the county Chamber of Commerce, the Farm at Miller's Crossing CSA, the Concerned Woman of Claverack and the county and town Democratic committees.

Cashen is a member of the St. James Roman Catholic Church.

In terms of issues, Cashen feels that keeping land and housing affordable for people of all ages and walks of life is key to the town's future success.

"The increased land and housing prices, together with higher taxes have made it difficult for many people, especially young families and senior citizens, to buy and maintain their houses," she stated in a questionnaire. "If elected, I would focus immediately on completing the comprehensive plan and then carry through with the needed changes in zoning for the town."

On the issue of taxes, Cashen said she would conduct a full review of the town budget and see what could be modified to perhaps reduce the tax burden and would also look into making assessments more fair.

She sees lack of good jobs as another challenge.

"I would like to explore how the town can be the catalyst between the school system and local employers to provide apprenticeship and mentor opportunities for young people," she said.

Maintaining the rural character of the town is also key to Cashen and she feels supporting farmers and preserving open space is how to keep it rural.

"The Town Board should be leading the effort and bringing interested parties together to make sure that they address all of these issues in an open and participatory way," she said.

My team -- Katy Cashen and Cyndy Hall for Town Board and Jenny Post for town clerk -- will help me deliver on my promise that we will.

The Democrat/Hometown Party slate composed of Max Dannis, Katy Cashen, Cyndy Hall and Jenny Post has done much more than just identify the issues -- they have a real plan to deal with the issues, and they have shared this with the voters.

Their names are Max Dannis, Katy Cashen, Cyndy Hall and Jenny Post.
    ...
That means that candidates like Katy Cashen and Cyndy Hall who have been here as long as the Republican candidates (or longer) are to be thought of as second-class citizens.

    Listserv Moderator: Katy Cashen

The committee was formed to create all electronic and printed communications for the Claverack Democrats. The first effort was the creation of a media campaign for the 2003 election. This website,claverack.org,emerged from that campaign, was launched in 2003, and then was expanded in 2004 to include a section on town government. The Claverack listserv, an e-mail tool for Claverack Democrats, was established in 2004.

The Democrats for Claverack Campaign 2005 made good use of this website, four billboards, many, many lawn signs placed all over our town, a personal presence at campaign headquarters in Philmont at 104 Main Street, and other media (including Max Dannis's Big Blue Bus) to support our four candidates for local office,Max Dannis for Town Supervisor, Katy Cashen and Cyndy Hall for Town Board, and Jenny Post for Town Clerk.

    ...
To challenge incumbent Blaauw and newcomer Johnston, the Democrats will put up long-time residents Cyndy Hall, 59, and Katy Cashen, 44.
    ...
Cashen, a graduate of Taconic Hills High School with bachelor's and master's degrees in political science and public policy, spent more than 20 years working at the state and national levels on workforce and labor issues.

"I believe that our town government would be stronger and more inclusive with bi-partisan representation on it," she said in the release. "I have a great deal of career experience in working with divergent views and gaining consensus on issues and would like to be part of a similar process in my hometown of Claverack."

The Democratic caucus chose to endorse Republican Louis Lamont, current Highway Supervisor, feeling that he is doing an excellent job and deserves to be re-elected.
