Cashen gets chance at Sparta
Thursday, January 17, 2002
...
Dave Cashen has had the passion to be a high school varsity football coach from the time he entered coaching 25 years ago.
He's been close to landing jobs in the past, but hasn't been given the opportunity. Four years ago he finished runner-up for the Grandville job, losing out to current head coach Irv Sigler III.
But the wait is over for Cashen, 43, who was approved as Sparta's new coach at the district's school board meeting Monday. He replaces Mark Batchelder, who resigned after posting a 2-7 record last season.
"It's obviously something that I have been pursuing for quite some time now, and I finally get an opportunity," Cashen said.
After graduating from high school in 1977, Cashen landed a job as an assistant varsity coach at Shepherd High School. From there, his career has taken him from Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart High School to Byron Center, Grandville, Grand Rapids Christian and most recently to Caledonia, where he served as offensive coordinator last season.
"I think Dave is more than ready," Caledonia coach Tom Burrill said.
