At 10:40 a.m. Monday, a deputy spoke to Tami Cash, 44, of Port Charlotte, who called to report an alleged battery earlier in the day.

According to a report, Cash told the deputy that she had attended the protest early Monday morning at PCHS to support the school and its students who formed the GSA, whose mission statement is to "foster a more understanding and tolerant community on campus and in the area."

About 20 members of the religious anti-gay group from Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kan., showed up Monday to protest the alliance. Cash told the deputy that during the protest, she went up to one of the protesters and asked if she could enter their roped-off area because "she had interest in what the protesters were doing."

Cash said she walked around and then asked another protester if she could have one of the signs that the group was carrying, to which the protester said "yes" and handed her a sign, according to the report.
    ...
Cash said she took the sign to make a "peaceful statement."
    ...
Shirley Phelps-Roper, a member and one of several attorneys for WBC, said Cash obtained the sign through deception and that Phelps had every right to take the sign back.
    ...
The police officer ripped the sign out of (Cash's) hand."
