Shirley Cash
Shirley Cash hopes to draw more people to Calhoun County schools.
Cash, a Democrat, is seeking her second term on the Calhoun County Board of Education.
"We're a great system, and we need to get our name before the public," she said. "When people move here, we want them to say they want their child in a Calhoun County school. We have some award-winning schools, some nationally recognized teachers. These are good things."
Cash said she also wants to involve all the stakeholders in the county system.
"I want a partnership, between the board, administration, teachers, students and parents," she said. "We have to work together. Our teachers are well-educated and have some good ideas. We need to listen and discuss in an open relationship. I have the heart of a teacher."
Cash taught for 30 years at Weaver Elementary School.
Under federal No Child Left Behind standards, Cash said local school boards have little flexibility in determining curriculum. She said she would like the next board members to work with organizations, such as the Alabama Association of School Boards, to sway state education policymakers.
Cash also said she wants to continue working on the county system's five-year capital plan.
"We have growth," she said. "Now we have to adjust and fit the needs."
Cash's daughter attends Pleasant Valley High School.
Cash graduated from Jacksonville High School and holds education degrees from Jacksonville State University and the University of Alabama. She lives on West Point Road in Pleasant Valley.
