A new consumer website being developed for best practice clinical guidelines will take material written by physicians and then re-write it for the consumer, according to Linda Cash, program manager for The Change Foundation. The website should be functional in January or February.
"This is for the informed consumer, who has wanted more information about their health," explains Cash.
Traditional consumer behaviour is evident in the health care marketplace where today's users of health services are sophisticated and informed and demand a much bigger say in their own health care, she points out.
"The interaction between consumer and health care provider is therefore much more interactive than it has been in the past. The evolution of the consumer's role in the health care marketplace has a number of different effects, with implications for what they come to expect from the system and how they behave," she notes.
The Foundation is starting off with four specific areas of emphasis for the website: heart disease, diabetes, lower back pain and anxiety and depression. "We want physicians to be confident when they are sending patients to the site to access information," says Cash, who points out patients are quickly turned into consumers when they can find their own information and make an informed choice.

An example, says Cash, is acute low back pain, another of the four focus areas for the website. Cash says physicians have been very supportive of this area being included because of the high prevalence of patients visits (second after physician visits after the common cold) and the need to have better educated patients, understanding the need for minimal investigations and interventions.
"The fact is, some of the questions people might have around back pain might be dealt with here (on the site) helping patients understand the best practices in managing their condition, thus reducing patient apprehension, contributing to speeding recovery and reducing use of health care resources, says Cash. -
