Latrice Gaines of Detroit is consulted by her obstetrician, Dr. Charles T. Cash Jr., at Oakwood Hospital and Medical Center in Dearborn regarding a new sterilization procedure.

Her doctor, Charles T. Cash Jr., had an option that met her needs.On Mrs. Gaines' 30th birthday, she went to Oakwood Hospital and Medical Center, Dearborn, to be the first patient there to receive the Essure sterilization device.

"The egg basically is reabsorbed," Dr. Cash said."The abdomen won't fill up with eggs."
Mrs. Gaines' procedure was done in the operating room under general anesthesia.In the future, Dr. Cash will do the procedure in his office with local anesthesia.

Later this month she'll return to Dr. Cash to confirm that the tubes are blocked.After that, she will never need another form of birth control.
Dr. Cash, chief of obstetrics and gynecology, brought Essure to Oakwood Hospital.
"It's a different way of doing a tubal ligation," said Dr. Cash.

"There is no inflammation in the body," Dr. Cash said."It stays in place.It does not wander."
A woman who has the procedure done on a Thursday can be back to work or other duties by Monday, Dr. Cash said.Initially there may be menstrual-like cramping or discharge.Otherwise, the woman won't experience any other changes.
"You're still going to have PMS," Dr. Cash said.

"Currently the company won't release the product to just anybody," Dr. Cash said."There is a little safety net there."
