   FORT WORTH - Ward Phelps Casey , a quick-witted defense attorney who earned the respect of some of Tarrant County's finest lawyers , died Tuesday evening of a heart attack at his home. He was 64.
   
   Funeral will be at 3 : 30 p.m. Friday at Greenwood Funeral Home.
   
   Mr. Casey had a brilliant , brilliant mind for legal issues and was a tough opponent in the courtroom , said Greg Miller , deputy chief of the criminal division of the Tarrant County district attorney's.

   Mr. Casey was born Jan. 25 , 1937 , in San Diego. A Navy veteran , Mr. Casey graduated from South Texas College of Law and was licensed to practice law in 1968. He moved to Tarrant County in 1974 , where he became a prosecutor in the Tarrant County district attorney's.
   
   A year later , he went into private practice in Fort Worth. At the time of his death , he was a partner in the law firm Magnussen , Thomas and Casey.

   Mr. Casey suggested that Bates argue that the defendant had not committed burglary because , as a crack house , the home was a business , and therefore could not be burglarized simply by opening the front door.

   After Mr. Casey defended Brosky in 1993 , a jury gave Brosky probation , which sparked widespread protests throughout the county.

   Mr. Casey opposed the second trial on the grounds that it was politically motivated and violated Brosky's constitutional right to not be tried twice for the same crime.
   
   Miller , who knew Mr. Casey for more than 20 years , said Mr. Casey would be the first defense attorney he would call if he ever needed one.

   Friends and family said Mr. Casey was a workaholic who spent most of his spare time at his home outside Springtown.
   
   Survivors include his wife of 29 years , Karon ; 11 grandchildren , including a granddaughter Mr. Casey and his wife raised ; three daughters ; one brother ; and a stepson.
