HPD Officer Vernon Casey, former president of FOP Lodge 65, said the sight of so many children having a merry Christmas is enough to melt the heart of even the staunchest-looking cop.

"The logistics of planning this thing is unbelievable, but when you look out and see this, it,s all worthwhile," he said.

FOP Gold Star Lodge 65 has taken out ads to air on three Huntington radio stations five times daily, said Vernon Casey, FOP president.
    ...
The ads will air starting today on WDGG The Dawg-93.7 FM, WRVC-930 AM and SUNNY 92.7 FM, Casey said. The FOP has received mostly positive feedback from residents about the campaign, he said.

"We had to take and put them (the ads) out there because everyone is sticking their heads in the sand and hoping it will go away," he said. "Well, it's been done. If they continue this, we're gone July 1."

The radio ads also encourage Huntington residents to voice their concerns about police layoffs to City Council and the mayor.

"We make it (the radio ad) like a 911 call to catch people's attention so they'll listen," Casey said. "Then it just says that on July 1 it becomes reality that we lose nearly 1/3 of the police department."

City Council adopted the layoffs to reconcile a $900,000 deficit predicted for this fiscal year ending June 30 and to balance next year's budget. Council members and the mayor have said 46 total layoffs is the worst case scenario, and that if the deficit this year is lower than projected, it could reduce the number of layoffs.

    ...
"I'm hoping that council's going to sit down and try to do something," Casey said.
