    Dr Martin CaseyWe are very sorry to have to let colleagues know that Dr Martin Casey, Lecturer in the School of Earth and Environment, died on 10 June.

    Martin Casey enjoyed an international reputation as a structural geologist.He was a recognised authority on the modelling of natural deformation features and the author of papers fundamental to the understanding of the deformation responses of rock.He graduated from Cambridge in Natural Sciences (Geology) in 1970 and went on to complete an MSc and PhD at Imperial College, his doctoral thesis being on the computer modelling of geological structures.Martin first came to Leeds in 1976 to take up a two-year NERC post-doctoral fellowship in the then Department of Earth Sciences.He then moved to ETH Zürich (the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology), where he held a number of senior appointments (including directing the use of computers in teaching and research in the Geology section of the Institute) and was awarded the Swiss equivalent of a DSc.He continued to collaborate with staff in the Rock Deformation Research Group in his former department at Leeds and returned to the University in 1996, initially as a senior research fellow and later as a lecturer.He was the director of the MSc programme in Structural Geology.During 1998 and 1999, he held visiting appointments at academic institutions in Germany and France.

    Funeral and WakeThe funeral of Dr Casey will be held on Friday, 20 June, at 1.30pm, at Rawdon Crematorium, Leeds Road, Rawdon, Leeds LS19 6JP.The service will be followed by a wake, in Otley Rugby Union Football Club, Pool Road, Cross Green, Otley LS21 1HE.

    The family have requested no flowers, please, but donations may be made to St John's Ambulance, either at the funeral or through the funeral directors: Good's Funeral Service, High Dykes, 82 Bradford Road, Otley LS21 3LE (tel: 01943 462646).
