A closer estimate is better than saying options have no accounting cost, said Mark L. Casey, an investment analyst with Capital Research in San Francisco.

"Lots of things are impossible to estimate," he said.

"Dilution and earnings per share doesn't come close to capturing the real cost to owners of the company of stock options," said Mark Casey, an investment analyst at Capital Research and Management Co.
