Maria Casey, Artist in Residence 2005
Maria Casey was Artist in Residence with the Waterford Healing Arts Trust in 2005.
Sligo born artist, Maria Casey worked as a horticulturalist prior to returning to education as a mature student. She graduated with a Degree in Fine Art Sculpture from Limerick School of Art and Design in 2000. Maria's art practice is based on a response to different contexts and materials and she is therefore drawn to working through artists' residencies. Since leaving art college she has participated in a number of residencies, including Visual Dialogues, North Tipperary County Council (2005), Art at Work, Roscommon County Council, (2003 & 2004), Kilkenny County Council (2003/4) and the Akerby Gallery in Skulpturpark Sweden (2001). She has exhibited in numerous group shows and her first solo show Strange Beginnings took place in the County Hall Kilkenny in 2002.
When she came to Waterford Regional Hospital in August 2005, Maria Casey observed the laundry at work. Inspired by the notion of the laundry as a melting pot for the operations of thirteen hospitals in the South East, Maria used uniforms and pyjamas as a material for exploring the notion of identity and how hospital roles are defined by clothes. She was also concerned with making public the workings of the laundry which is a vital but often hidden part of the hospital's operations.
In Maria's words ‘I see a strong association between hospital pyjamas and the patient's experience. In using pyjamas as a canvas for words, I am attempting to convey feelings and thoughts related to the patient's experience in hospital. I am inviting viewers to re-evaluate these objects and reflect on their personal hospital experiences'.
Maria presented her ideas through a series of installations on these themes in a solo exhibition entitled ‘Maria's exhibition' which went on view in Greyfriars Municipal Gallery in January 2006. -
