Brian Casey of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and chair of the Bureau's awards committee presented the awards.

Outagamie County and the Outagamie County Regional Airport received the Destination Builder award for recent improvements to the airport terminal. Nearly 500,000 people pass through the airport annually.

"The new terminal really makes an impact on visitors to the area," said Casey.

"The Fox Cities Marathon brings name recognition to our community, as well as those cherished overnight visitors," commented Casey. "Although it's difficult to track exact numbers, the Bureau staff estimates that in 2002 it brought in 300 room nights, with an estimated economic impact of over $62,000."

EAA's Airventure was presented with the Convention Award in recognition of its consistent creation of convention business in the area.

"Although this event takes place in Oshkosh, it's certainly regional in nature," said Casey.

He dates the company's indoor smoking ban back to May 1, 1985.Casey also cites a 1986 newspaper article that credits Thrivent as the first major employer in Wisconsin to ban smoking in its buildings.
