Two are from Gwinnett County - Pedro "Pete" Marin, a Democrat representing the new House District 66 in Duluth, and David Casas, a Republican from Lilburn, representing House District 68.

"What my victory means is that my district wanted to elect a common-sense representative," Casas said."No doubt, I am Hispanic, but I wasn't elected because I'm Hispanic."
Casas is a high school political science and history teacher at McEachern High School in Cobb County. His parents are Cuban refugees, who fled first to Spain and then the United States. He and his wife, Ann, live in Lilburn and are expecting their first child in June.

Casas ran on education reform, and he proposes to set up a commission to measure the effectiveness of various programs."We've had four reform plans," Casas said."We're still 50th in the country. There's something wrong."
In particular, he would like to look at the English as a second language (ESOL) program."Large numbers of Hispanics are dropping out of school," Casas said. (Two out of three Hispanics in Georgia dropped out of high school in 1998, according to a recent study by the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research.) "What is ESOL doing?Where is that money going?"
Marin plans to concentrate on gang-related problems.

"For the son of Cuban refugees to be able to grow up in this country and now be elected to the legislature, you don't see that anywhere else but America," Casas said."This is a county where immigrants come to live, work and prosper and run for office and participate."
