I was honored to sit with some of the most awesome people in the room, the Aflac nurses, particularly our favorites, Dawn and Erica.I didn' t tell you that Erica was Ryan's "girlfriend" at Camp Sunshine this past summer.He can always find the pretty girls.

Dawn, I am bringing yours to the Quiet Heroes luncheon.Thank you, too!No news, yet on the adenoid surgery.

It was wonderful to see Dawn and to meet her family.They are all so proud of her, and rightly so.She wasn't named to the top 3, but will always be #1 in our hearts.

As the 7-year-old from Winder awaited a tandem stem cell transplant to treat his cancer last year, Ryan and his parents got to know many of the nurses at the hospital, including Dawn Carver, RN, BSN

"Dawn was so compassionate to Ryan and to us," said Missy Morgan, Ryan's mom.

"It's a blessing and an honor for me to help these kids and their families," Carver said."I've never considered doing anything else but being a nurse."Carver grew up in Duluth and attended the University of Georgia before getting her nursing degree from Georgia State.As a pediatric oncology nurse, she works closely with patients and families during their cancer treatments."The survival rate is quite high, especially with the improved treatment techniques and continuing research," she said.Carver has volunteered for the last eight years as a camp counselor at Camp Sunshine, a summer program for youngsters with cancer."When I go there, I'm their camp counselor, not their nurse," Carver said.

Our sweet nurse, Dawn, sent us a bouquet of cookies.He is taking one to school today for his snack!!The cookies are because we nominated her for a nursing excellence award that is being sponsored by the AJC and several Atlanta hospitals.They received over 200 nominations and Dawn is currently in the top 10!!
