Carolyn Cartwright, senior counselor at Columbian High School, talks with senior Bobby English, who's looking at taking classes at Savannah College of Art and Design.

"I think if they have taken a rigorous (schedule) here and have good attendance and have a good work ethic … I think that makes college easier for them because they're used to working hard," said Carolyn Cartwright, senior guidance counselor at Columbian High School.
...
Cartwright said students who have 3.0 grade point averages can participate in the Post-Secondary Enrollment Options program, which allows high school students to take college courses for credit.
At Columbian, mostly juniors and seniors take advantage of the opportunity, and the majority enroll in classes through Heidelberg College and Tiffin University, she said.
"We adjust their schedule accordingly," Cartwright said.

Cartwright said Columbian graduates who return to their alma mater after taking college courses say they're surprised by the differences between high school and college schedules.
They're used to being in school 7:45 a.m.-2:45 p.m. daily and face college life that's not quite as guided as high school, she said.

Cartwright said she either visits senior English classes at Columbian at the end of September or in the beginning of October to talk about college applications, financial aid and scholarships.
Her advice for high school students eyeing higher education is to score well on the ACT, be well-rounded and make sure schools have majors they want and campuses they like.
"That's going to be their home for four or five years," she said.
