Cartwright adds NCAA role to resume
...
To supplement her job as a university president, Carol Cartwright sits on 21 committees that range in focus from educational to cultural to athletic.
Some meet only a few times a year.Others, such as the NCAA executive committee, to which she was recently elected chair, have more "rigorous" schedules.
In deciding whether to accept an offer to be on a committee, Cartwright said she has to ask herself if she can balance the workload.
"The key is: Does it fit a university purpose, and can I manage the work?"she said."And I happen to be a person with very significant energy. For me, this is a reasonable number for what I can balance."

Cartwright has been a member of the NCAA executive committee and the Division I Board of Directors since 1997.She said her new position will take more of her time, but it's worth it.
"As you have a leadership responsibility, you have to spend additional time, but we consider that very important on behalf of our athletic association and on influencing national athletics," she said.
Cartwright said she gets more offers to be on committees than she can accept.
She said she would have liked to have said "no" to some of the committees she agreed to be on, but she was urged to accept by some academic departments.
But she did emphasize the importance that some committees, such as the Ohio Polymer Strategy Council she's on, have on academics.
"Having somebody on a steering committee, tracking this issue, became very important for our faculty and researchers in the Liquid Crystal Institute," Cartwright said.

Cartwright said the university's Board of Trustees told her, when she was hired in 1991, it would be "highly desirable" for her to sit on corporate boards because of networking and outreach opportunities.
She said four boards is her limit, and she's expected to attend every meeting.
One of the four boards she's on is Davey Tree Expert Company.

Other than the corporate boards, Cartwright isn't paid for being on the committees, but she's reimbursed for expenses.
In fact, in some instances, like the Musical Arts Association for the Cleveland Orchestra, she said she's expected to make personal contributions.
