Some 57 jobs are at risk at the charity while administrators 'investigate all possible options… to determine if a sustainable economic structure can be delivered that will enable the Lighthouse Trust to continue its existing role', said Bruce Cartwright, head of business recovery services at PwC.

Cartwright said the Lighthouse Trust 'has traditionally been reliant on substantial income generated from commercial activities to run the Grade A listed Mackintosh Building and this market, particularly in relation to income from conferences and functions has been hit hard in the current market conditions with many organisations taking events in-house'.

He added: 'I understand that the board was in the course of taking steps to address a funding shortfall but it became apparent that while the revised business plan addressed many of the issues, it could not address the funding deficit derived from losses incurred in the previous twelve months'.

PwC Scotland's head of business recovery Bruce Cartwright said the resort's former operator, Aviemore Highland Resort Ltd, had insufficient assets to pay hundreds of suppliers, including Cairngorm Mountain, Colin Baxter Photography, Corrie Group, Destination Loch Ness, George Campbell and Sons, Highland Council, Scotbeef, Spey Valley Hire Centre and VisitScotland.

"Many people are pleased that the business is being restructured because they will continue as suppliers," he said.

Bruce Cartwright, head of business recovery services at PriceWaterhouseCoopers, is dealing with the administration of the company.

He said: "Work had stopped on the site before we took control last November. The contractors had gone into administration and then Dowanhill Investors ran into financial difficulty.

"We have done some work to ensure the sites has been closed down safely and we are now working with the planning department to find a way to restart the development. Though I can't give a date for this, things are looking very positive."

Mr Cartwright added that Dowanhill Investors had not made anyone redundant as the firm does not directly employ any staff and hires contractors to carry out the work.
