Mary Mallard Carter

Mary D. Mallard Carter is a resident of Moss Point and a retired educator.She received the Bachelor of Arts from Tougaloo College and the Masters of Science from the University of Southern Mississippi.She has also done graduate study at Utica Campus of Hinds Community College, and taught English in the Moss Point School System for a total of thirty years.

She is a charter member and president emeritus of the local chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, a member of the board of Directors for the Jackson County Literacy Council, a member of Asbury Chapel A.M.E Zion Church, a member of Phi Delta Kappa honorary education society, and co-founder of the Del-Teen Civic and Social Club.She has served as secretary to the local chapter of the American Red Cross, block chairperson for the Breast Cancer Society, Moss Point Chairwoman for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and as a member of the Southern Leadership Team for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, and her paper "Survival of the Black Family" won second place in the sorority's National Position Paper Contest.She and her husband were court-appointed foster parents to two children in 2001.

She is the recipient of the Alpha Phi Drum Major Award, the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Citizen of the Year Award, and the Les Dames D'Amour Mother of the Year Award.

An aide, Mary Ann Carter, wrote him a memorandum urging him "to rethink our decision not to be a co-sponsor."He changed his mind, but only after she reminded him that he had blasted his Democratic opponent for opposing a flag burning amendment and promised the Citizens Flag Alliance to support one if elected.

Mary Carter, a medication aide at a local nursing home, said canoeing was her favorite thing to do.

"I've gone every time since 1994," she said.

Current chapter president Mary M. Carter, 22, says hearing about the past from the people who lived it is much different from reading about it.

"We really want to recapture what these 25 years have been about," she says."It's a lifetime commitment.We have a lot of years ahead of us."

Police arrested the Geminus bus driver, Harry Beasley, 61, and aide, Mary Carter, 56, at the school later that day, after Patrolman Laria Cooley saw the boy at the bus stop near 35th Avenue and Washington Street where Carter left Joshua on the corner alone.

Blue then started his own canoeing school, called Canoeing Instructors Inc. and worked with Mary for 10 years.In addition to the school, Blue and Mary co-led "The Waluta Paddlers," a Camp Fire Boys and Girls canoe club and taught canoeing at Camp Waluta in the summers.After Blue's death in 2002, Canoeing Instructors, Inc. was renamed Shawl Canoe School in his memory.

Co-Founder & Instructor Mary CarterMary has been an American Red Cross Lifeguard for 8 years, a canoeing instructor for 10 years, an instructor trainer for 6 years and a Water Safety Instructor for 9 years.She worked for 11 years as Program Coordinator for The Southeast Texas Camp Fire Council, Inc.In the summers she was Water Front Director and Canoeing Instructor at Camp Waluta, in addition to co-leading "The Waluta Paddlers", a Camp Fire canoe club.When on dry land, Mary is a Medication Aide at an area nursing home.
