    Mary D. Mallard Carter is a resident of Moss Point and a retired educator.She received the Bachelor of Arts from Tougaloo College and the Masters of Science from the University of Southern Mississippi.She has also done graduate study at Utica Campus of Hinds Community College, and taught English in the Moss Point School System for a total of thirty years.

    She is a charter member and president emeritus of the local chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, a member of the board of Directors for the Jackson County Literacy Council, a member of Asbury Chapel A.M.E Zion Church, a member of Phi Delta Kappa honorary education society, and co-founder of the Del-Teen Civic and Social Club.She has served as secretary to the local chapter of the American Red Cross, block chairperson for the Breast Cancer Society, Moss Point Chairwoman for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and as a member of the Southern Leadership Team for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, and her paper "Survival of the Black Family" won second place in the sorority's National Position Paper Contest.She and her husband were court-appointed foster parents to two children in 2001.

    She is the recipient of the Alpha Phi Drum Major Award, the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Citizen of the Year Award, and the Les Dames D'Amour Mother of the Year Award.

    Blue then started his own canoeing school, called Canoeing Instructors Inc. and worked with Mary for 10 years.In addition to the school, Blue and Mary co-led "The Waluta Paddlers," a Camp Fire Boys and Girls canoe club and taught canoeing at Camp Waluta in the summers.After Blue's death in 2002, Canoeing Instructors, Inc. was renamed Shawl Canoe School in his memory.
