    However, on a drive one day, Mary Carter asked about a piece of land that had served a number of purposes over the years.

    The land owned by the city used to be an emergency landing strip for B-25's that were using one of the islands in Lake Huron for bombing runs in W.W. II.It later provided the site for a snowmobile race and most recently hosted a kite festival.

    The city owned the land and was interested in the project.They gave final approval for the land buy on January 15, 1996.

    Mr. Carter was a graduate of McDonald High School and attended Northwestern University where he took classes in management and Hampton University taking classes in mechanics.

    He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, honorably discharged December 1, 1945 as a machinist mate first class.

    Mr. Carter was a member of First Baptist Church, McDonald, for more than 75 years, serving on the trustees board for more than 40 years and as chairman for six years.He also was a member of the its men's usher board and chorus.

    In the community, Mr. Carter was a member of Community League of McDonald, serving in many capacities including president.He was a member of Theodore Crawford American Legion Post 923 in McDonald, serving as commander.

    He was a member of Lincoln Lodge 90 F&AM in McDonald, which later merged with Lincoln Star 71 F&AM in Ambridge.He served as worshipful master, president of the 10th Masonic district, grand trustee of East of the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of the State of Pennsylvania, was a member of Mary Chapter 24 Order of Eastern Star in McDonald, where he held the position of worthy patron and was a member of St. Cyprian Consistory 4, Valley of Pittsburgh.

    Mr. Carter worked as a mechanic at Poskin Bus Lines in McDonald for 16 years.When the company was purchased by Port Authority of Allegheny County, he continued as a general superintendent of equipment for 21 years, retiring in 1982.
