Whitestone resident and 2006 election mayoral candidate Mary Carter said phasing in the increase is a good idea.

"As far as I'm concerned, being a council member - whether being council member, mayoral candidate or a councillor - your job, obviously, is to represent community members.Remuneration is just a perk and shouldn't be a priority," she said.

'Shouldn't be required'

Remuneration shouldn't be required by a person sitting on council and helping community members, Ms Carter said.
