    A An exercise stress test can help find out how well your heart works when you exercise.Beforehand, you will be attached to heart-monitoring equipment.Then, you will walk on a treadmill or ride a stationary bicycle, gradually increasing your pace and effort.During and after testing, you will be monitored for heart rate and rhythm, breathing and blood pressure.

    "A stress test is typically used to determine whether certain symptoms, such as chest pain or shortness of breath with exertion, indicate coronary artery disease (CAD)," says Jeffrey Carstens, M.D., cardiologist with The Nebraska Medical Center.
