Sean Carr, the council's Recreation and Leisure Committee chairman, yesterday welcomed the consultation on the draft strategy.
He said: ‘‘The draft strategy states there is no reason to limit ambitions as we believe Derry is already a cultural city and the challenge is to sustain and develop this achievement by building on excellence, experience and participation.
"Through consultation with all arts, cultural, sports organisations and agencies we will actively seek comments on the recommendations and ensure the final strategy creates a framework that strengthens the cultural activity in the city and pushes the delivery of culture into a new era."
"Like Sean Carr, I too welcome this bold bid to improve the plentiful cultural resources of this city. The redefinition of Londonderry's heart as a cultural quarter, as suggested, is long overdue; Londonderry having one of the most eye pleasing and historically fascinating city centres in Europe. The greater recognition of the cultural/tourism jewel in the crown that is Derry's Walls, as part of this, is essential and something that has been largely overlooked for years by artistic types who were perhaps over sensitive about the political symbolism of the historic ramparts.
