According to Scott Carr, senior project manager with Rodgers Builders, seven pumps will move 537,000 gallons of water per minute from the lower pond, up the 25 feet to the upper pond; than gravity will pull the water down forming rapids.Rodgers Builders will install the Sweden ITT flight 750 horsepower pumps while Starr electric, of Charlotte, N.C. will be responsible for the wiring.Steep slope of channel walls a challenge to the concrete work.According to Carr, the most difficult aspect of the project has been the placing of the concrete on the 33.69-degree wall angles of the manmade river."Placement and finishing of the concrete was difficult because of the 3:2 slope of the channels," Carr stated.
    ...
"The special equipment is more efficient than hand spraying and has increased productivity at the job site," Carr added."Approximately 12,000 cubic yards of concrete was utilized in the 6-inch concrete liner of the channel," Carr stated.
    ...
According to Carr, on site preparations for the U.S. Whitewater Center began in March of 2005."Preparation work included clearing the area of forest and the excavation of 300,000 cubic yards of dirt that was cut and filled on site to construct the channels," Carr stated."Showalter Construction of Charlotte, N.C. supplied the equipment and was responsible for all the excavation and grading."Creative financing moved project forward. The financing for the Whitewater rafting attraction involved convincing backers of Mecklenburg County, Charlotte and several Gaston County governments to guarantee their bank loans. If the project makes money as expected, local officials won't be responsible for any dept. The business plan estimates at least 177,000 people will raft the center's rapids each year; if the number of rafters paying to use the facility drops below 100,000, the center will fail to cover its expenses."The channel is a closed loop system with water supplied by wells and the Mecklenburg County water system," Carr explained.

"It (the artificial river) was unusual, and no one knew how to build one, and no one knew what it would cost," said Scott Carr, Rodgers' senior project manager."There were so many unknowns, and we had to convince the building inspectors it was safe."

That was especially true when all they had was a concept."We all did lots of research, and evaluating systems became an art," Carr added.

"They chased each other around the course," Carr said.

Still, Carr conceded there will be water loss - up to 100,000 gallons a day - from leakage, splashing, filter backwash and evaporation.

Those subs had to be convinced they could do the work because "it wasn't the typical job they did every day," Carr said."But we broke the work down and showed them they could do it cost-effectively and quickly."

RodgersDooley took responsibility for erosion-control monitoring of the site instead of handing it off to the site coordinator. The center sits on the Catawba's dirtiest tributary, Long Creek, where runoff is a major problem.

"This was just too important to us," Carr said.

"This one of the most unique and fun jobs I have ever worked on," says Scott Carr, senior project manager.

Rodgers Dooley, a partnership between Rodgers Builders Inc. and R.T. Dooley Construction Co., has worked on several other high-profile projects locally, including Johnson & Wales University's uptown campus and Ballantyne Village.

Carr and Wise say a course engineer, former Olympian Scott Shipley, will start testing and adjusting the whitewater course in the spring.

"People will be blown away when they see it," said senior project manager Scott Carr with Rodgers Builders.

Carr stood in the middle of a concrete basin Monday and described how crews will use rock clumps and floats to create the "zoom flume," one of the course's most thrilling rapids.
