    William CarpenterChairman and CEO , Bausch & Lomb Inc.

    Carpenter , 48 , joined Bausch & Lomb in March 1995 as executive vice president and global business manager of eyewear.He was named president and chief operating officer in December 1995 and was elected to the board of directors in 1996.He took the positions of president and CEO in January 1997 , and became chairman and CEO in January 1999.

    Prior to joining Bausch & Lomb , Carpenter held sales , marketing and operating positions with Johnson & Johnson.He later held management positions with Reckitt & Colman Inc. , culminating with his being named president and CEO.

    Carpenter serves on the boards of the United Way of Greater Rochester Inc. and the University of Rochester , and is a member of the Bishop's Stewardship Council of the Catholic Diocese of Rochester.

    Carpenter received a B.A. in history from Dartmouth College and a master's degree in management , marketing and finance from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University.
