Tintara Winemaker Paul Carpenter is delighted to release three new single vineyard wines reflecting the quality of McLaren Vale for world class Shiraz.
The 2004 Tintara Single Vineyard Blewitt Springs, 2004 Tintara Single Vineyard Upper Tintara and 2004 Tintara Single Vineyard McLaren Flat wines will appear in the market in very limited quantities next week.
‘McLaren Vale experienced an exceptional vintage in 2004, particularly for shiraz', said Mr Carpenter.
‘When walking the vineyards during the 2004 vintage and tasting fruit from throughout McLaren Vale, we saw an excellent opportunity to create three single vineyard wines of remarkable quality to showcase the region.'
Tintara's 2004 Single Vineyard collection is a fascinating insight into the diversity possible from a single grape variety in a single wine region. The differences in each wine are purely vineyard derived, brought about by variances in soil type, vine age, aspect and altitude.
Mr Carpenter described the Blewitt Springs site as the most elevated of the three vineyards, with soil of deep grey sand over ironstone rock clay and yielding at seven tonnes per hectare. These vines are 40 years old and entirely dry-grown.
‘The 2004 Blewitt Springs Shiraz displays aromatic spice and red fruits, with elegant tannin structure and exceptional length', he said.
The Upper Tintara vineyard is 105 years old and has soil of shallow shaley red loam over clay. The coolest of the vineyard sites, with a yield of five tones per hectare, this wine exhibits savoury spice laden flavours, fine tannins and structural power that will see many years of ageing potential.
Grown on the plains of McLaren Vale, the McLaren Flat vineyard has rich black and red friable loam soils yielding at 6.5 tonnes per hectare.
The fruit from the McLaren Flat vineyard is concentrated and intense', said Mr Carpenter, ‘with the wine displaying classic rich chocolate and ripe plum characteristics of McLaren Vale Shiraz'.
‘This is the style of shiraz that has made McLaren Vale famous around the world.'
Tintara Winemaker Paul Carpenter grew up in the Willunga district on his family's commercial flower farm and has always been a great supporter of Fleurieu Peninsula produce.
‘I have a deep passion for the McLaren Vale region and am delighted to be able to showcase the region through this trio of wines', Mr Carpenter said.
