Rick Carlson was the kind of man who loved teaching statistics to college students.But he also handled explosives underground in South African gold mines and once escorted a caravan of cars through war-torn Mozambique.

In 1983, Mr. Carlson moved to South Africa, where he worked underground as a certified explosives specialist.He also worked in corporate gold mining offices in Johannesburg.
In 1993, he returned to Colorado to take care of his parents.He also began work on his doctorate.He taught at Metropolitan State College of Denver, Red Rocks and Colorado Technical University Online.
Mr. Carlson was a longtime member of the Denver Barbarians rugby team and coached the first women's rugby team at the School of Mines.In 2000, he was inducted into the Colorado Rugby Hall of Fame.
A memorial Mass was celebrated Oct. 26 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Golden.He was cremated.Contributions may be made to the Eastern Rockies Rugby Football Union, 7275 S. Xenia Circle, Unit B, Centennial, CO 80112.
