"During the procedure, a woman lies on her stomach, places one breast through an opening in the table and an X-ray machine takes mammograms from each side of the breast," says Dr. Richard Carlson, a radiologist and member of Fairview Physician Associates."A computer uses the pictures to calculate the exact location of a suspicious area, allowing a needle to be placed into the area with great precision so a sample of tissue can be obtained."Many physicians are turning to stereotactic breast biopsy as an alternative to surgery, the traditional method of biopsy of breast abnormalities.

"If the tissue we find through stereotactic breast biopsy is cancerous or potentially cancerous, it must be surgically removed," Carlson says."But if the tissue is clearly benign, stereotactic breast biopsy spares women a lot of unnecessary discomfort and cost."
