MIDDLETOWN - Reverend Dennis G. Carey has been appointed pastor of St. John Parish, Middletown, by the Most Reverend Michael R. Cote, D.D., Bishop of Norwich.The appointment became effective Oct. 8, 2003.Father Carey had been administrator of St. John's since Sept. 18, 2002.
Father Carey was ordained a priest May 30, 1998 by the Most Reverend Daniel A. Hart, D.D., Bishop of Norwich, in St. Patrick Cathedral.Following his ordination, he served as parochial vicar of St. Joseph Parish, New London; St. John the Evangelist Parish, Old Saybrook; temporary administrator of Sacred Heart Parish, Wauregan, while serving as temporary parochial vicar of Most Holy Trinity Parish, Pomfret.He was appointed to the board of directors of Mount St. John, Inc., Deep River, by Bishop Hart.He was appointed a member of the board of directors and treasurer of Catholic Charities and Family Services of the Diocese of Norwich, Inc., and to the Four County Catholic advisory board by Bishop Cote.
He began his preparation for the priesthood in 1994 at Blessed John XXIII National Seminary, Weston, Mass.He completed his philosophy and theology studies there.In May 1998, he received his master of divinity (M.Div.) degree.
Born in Boston, Father Carey graduated in 1969 from Boston College, Chestnut Hill, Mass., with a bachelor's degree in accounting.He practiced for 25 years as a certified public accountant in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.Twenty of those years were in Manchester, N.H.He has held memberships in the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and their Quality Review Executive Committee, the New Hampshire Society of Certified Public Accountants, where he was also president, and the Massachusetts Society of Certified Public Accountants.He also was an incorporator of the Catholic Medical Center in Manchester, N.H.
