It's Official: Cappella Named New Dunellen Police Chief January 21, 2007

When Gerard Cappella, acting chief of the Dunellen Police Department, first considered a job in law enforcement, he was attracted to the challenges it offered.

"Different things happen every day," said Cappella, 43, who accepted his latest challenge when he was formally sworn in as Dunellen's chief of police during a ceremony Friday.

He had been serving as acting chief since August and takes over a department with four sergeants, 12 full-time officers and four dispatchers.
    ...
"I look forward to Gerard," Mayor Robert Seader said.
    ...
Cappella started his law enforcement career when he took a job as a dispatcher and later worked in the communications department at the county sheriff's office. He was a part-time special officer in 1983 and a patrolman two years later for Milltown, Cappella's hometown.

He joined the Dunellen Police Department after graduating from the Middlesex Police Academy in Edison. Cappella studied criminal justice at Middlesex County College in Edison, took part in a leadership program with the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police, and studied management at Northwestern University's Center for Public Safety in Evanston, Ill.

"Schooling is offered as you climb through the ranks," Cappella said. "Those types of study enhance leadership skills and abilities."

Cappella was made sergeant in 1998, lieutenant in 2002. During his years on the force, he has served as the deputy coordinator of the borough's Office of Emergency Management, joined the Middlesex County Bias Officers Association and taught programs on weapons and violence at Dunellen schools. He also implemented a domestic violence crisis team for the borough and revived the neighborhood crime watch.

Cappella said his more memorable moments on the job include reviving a person who suffered a heart attack and saving a child from choking.

"There are good points and bad points in this job," he said.

On 9/11, Cappella was deployed to Ground Zero to assist rescuers and the New York Police Department. "It took me a long time to get over" the emotional toll, he said.

As the new police chief, Cappella said he wants to start a bike patrol, increase the number of officers patrolling downtown and seek grant money to defray costs for programs.

Cappella is slated to make $99,015.72.
