Betty J. Cappella, chairwoman of Buffalo State College's educational foundations department, attributes the gaps between public and parochial schools, and between city and suburban schools, to both demographics and the resources available to schools.
"I respect standards and testing, but they only tell one very small part of the story," she said."If all things were equal, I suspect there would be no differences."
Teachers in the eight-county Catholic Diocese of Buffalo earn an average of $19,500 a year, compared to a median salary of $50,940 for public school teachers in Erie County and $49,841 for those in Niagara County.
The average class size is 25 students in Buffalo's Catholic schools, and 20 students in Catholic schools outside the city. That is roughly comparable to local public schools.
