Police have a "person of interest" in the hit-and-run crash on Highway 288-B south of Angleton that left a 50-year-old Angleton man in critical condition, Department of Public Safety Trooper Manuel Cantu said.

The pickup's driver left the scene, but witnesses and other evidence have led to a possible suspect, Cantu said.

Officer Darren Barnett, 33, was driving a 2003 Ford Crown Victoria with lights flashing and signals sounding south on Main Street through the intersection at 11:13 a.m., Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Manuel Cantu said.

A 1995 Ford Crown Victoria driven by Ubaldo Serrano, 21, east on Plantation Drive collided with the cruiser as it entered the intersection, Cantu said.

Cantu cited neither driver, but said the investigation is pending.Both drivers were wearing seatbelts.

Calvin Long, 53, died about 4 a.m. Saturday after his 1994 Chevrolet truck hit a Toyota Tundra head-on driven by Alex Schindler, 19, of League City, Department of Public Safety Trooper Manuel Cantu said.

Though the accident investigation is not yet complete, it appears the Jeep Cherokee carrying Alex Pulido and Guadalupe Sykes turned left onto FM 523 in front of Lackey's Suzuki motorcycle, failing to yield to oncoming traffic, said Department of Public Safety Trooper Manuel Cantu.

The collision of the motorcycle and the SUV was with such force and ensuing damage, Lackey might have contributed to the accident through excessive speed, Cantu said.

The driver of the pickup, a gold 2006 Ford F-250, was attempting to pass a car and the garbage truck when the pickup and Waste Management vehicle collided, Trooper Manuel Cantu of the Department of Public Safety's Freeport branch said, citing witness statements.
